Okay, so I am excited about this chapter for many reasons. One, it allows me to fast not just to diet or fit into my pants but to grow closer to Christ. Isn't that what all of our major life choices should do? I think so, but in our American culture food is used for many things - an escape from stress, an indulgence, a status symbol, a mindless act...none of which have anything to do with nutrition or thankfulness for God and creation's provisions for our health and wellness.
I love this song that Jenn wrote about in chapter one. I pray that it will be a song in my heart.
"I believe You're my healer.
I believe You are all I need.
I believe You're my portion.
I believe You're more than enough for me.
Jesus You're all I need."
While Jen Hatmaker spent an entire month focusing on her seven foods, Heather and I have agreed to one week for each of the seven areas of life her book focuses on. So while in the past I have focused on food in order to lose weight, show love to my friends and family, or to just devour whatever is in sight this week will mark a change. The purpose of my eating will not be about the food, but about the provider of the food, and the humble thanks for what we have, consciously mindful and praying for those who go without.
So here is my 7 food list:
coffee
eggs
chicken
spinach
black beans
cheese
tomatoes
(Can you tell I have a southwestern thing going here? I have always joked that I could eat Tex Mex every day. Well...here is my opportunity.)
I remembered Jenn's words as I prepared my eggs and coffee this morning for breakfast.."As I reduce, He is enough. As I simplify, He is enough. He is my portion where food and clothes and comfort fall woefully short. He can heal me from greed and excess, materialism and pride, selfishness, and envy. While my earthly treasures and creature comforts will fail me, Jesus is more than enough."
All of me,
Dawn
